Hi My Name Is - Some of the kids might be shy. This is understandable, and you should not push them outside of their comfort zone. This activity is fun for the kids and helps them tell everyone their name, without being put on the spot. Ask the children to say this sentence and fill in the blanks. My name is (name), and if I were an animal I would be a (animal) because (reason). You should start the activity by saying it yourself. Try to make it funny and interested to get them excited about doing it. You could say something like: My name is Mrs. B, and if I were an animal, I would be a cat because I like to take naps. Give the children time to think about what they want to say. You could ask them to draw pictures to go along with their sentence as well.

True or False Game - You would write five facts about yourself on the chalkboard. One of these facts has to be false. Read them to the kids and allow them to decide which one they think is not true. You can ask each child to stand up and say three things about themselves. Make sure they know that two things must be true, and one thing has to be untrue. If the child does not want to participate, do not force them to. Remember the first day is the hardest for most kids.

Circle Time - Arranging the children’s desks in a large circle, will help them to see everyone in the class better. This will in turn help them learn names faster. Anytime that you can have the children do a group activity will help them make friends quicker as well. When they start forming friends they will be more comfortable in class, and more willing to open up.

Preschool is a crucial time for children. In most cases preschool is the first opportunity a child has to be away from home all day. Being sure to include fun first day activities into your first weeks lesson plan will help them be more comfortable with you as well as the situation.
